USA : Miller Research Fellowship

Miller Fellowship Nominations are due no later than Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Invited nominees will be asked to complete an online application due no later than Friday, October 10, 2014.
The Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science invites department chairs, faculty advisors, professors and research scientists at institutions around the world to submit online nominations for Miller Research Fellowships in the basic sciences. The Miller Institute seeks to discover and encourage individuals of outstanding talent, and to provide them with the opportunity to pursue their research on the Berkeley campus. Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic achievement and the promise of their scientific research. Miller Fellows also have a keen curiosity about all science and share an appreciation for an interdisciplinary experience. The Miller Institute is the sponsor and the administrative home department for each Miller Fellow who is hosted by an academic department on the Berkeley campus. All research is performed in the facilities provided by the host UC Berkeley academic department(s). A list of current and former Miller Research Fellows is available on our website.

Qualifications

Miller Research Fellowships are intended for exceptional young scientists of great promise who have recently been awarded, or who are about to be awarded, the doctoral degree. Normally, Miller Fellows are expected to begin their Fellowship shortly after being awarded their Ph.D. A short period as a post-doctoral fellow elsewhere does not exclude eligibility. However, candidates who have already completed substantial postdoctoral training are unlikely to be successful except in unusual circumstances. Postdocs may not have been employed as an assistant professor, associate professor or professor in order to be eligible. A nominee cannot hold a paid or unpaid position on the Berkeley campus at the time of nomination or throughout the competition and award cycle, which can run into February. Nominees who are non-US citizens must show eligibility for obtaining J-1 Scholar visa status for the duration of the Miller Fellowship. The Miller Institute does not support H1B visa status. The Fellowship term must commence between July 1 and October 1, 2015. Eligible nominees will be invited by the Institute to apply for the fellowship. The nominee's email address becomes the candidate's unique ID, so please confirm your nominee's preferred and correct email address. Direct applications and self-nominations are not accepted. ALL nominations must be submitted online.

Terms of Appointment

  • Miller Fellowships are granted for a period of three years, generally beginning August 1 and ending on July 31. Starting dates are negotiable but must commence between July 1 and October 1.
  • The Institute provides a stipend of $63,000 with annual increases on subsequent anniversary dates. This stipend is not to be construed as salary for teaching or for duties rendered to the University of California.
  • Miller Fellows are entitled to all normal holidays observed by the University and are granted an annual bank of 24 days of personal time off. Personal time does not carry forward.
  • Twelve days of sick leave are granted annually.
  • Miller Fellows receive a research fund of $10,000 per annum to be used in support of research during the Miller Fellowship.
  • There is provision for travel to (but not away from) Berkeley for Miller Fellows and their immediate families. An additional allowance of $3,000 is allowed for the transport of personal belongings.
  • Benefits including medical, dental, vision, short term disability and life insurance are provided, with Miller Fellows making a small contribution towards the premium. Long term disability is voluntary.
  • All University of California postdocs are exclusively represented by the UAW and are subject to the terms of the contract including payment of membership dues or agency fees.
  • Approximately eight to ten Fellowships are awarded each year.
  • Candidates will be notified of the results of the competition between mid-December and mid-February, and a general announcement of the awards will be made in the spring.

Nomination Instructions

Nominations are accepted from department chairs, faculty advisors, professors or research scientists who can attest to the scientific potential of the Miller Fellow candidate. Nominations are accepted from individuals at institutions around the world, and are not limited to faculty at the University of California. Nominations cannot be made by an individual candidate, a student or a postdoc. Nominations will be accepted beginning in May. To be considered, complete nominations must be submitted online by September 10, 2014. The online nomination must be completed during a single online session, therefore nominators will need the following information about their candidate to complete the online process:
  • Nominee's complete and full legal name (Do not use nicknames)
  • Nominee's preferred and correct active e-mail address
(notification of nomination is sent to this email address)
  • Nominee's current institution
  • Nominee's preferred mailing address
  • Nominee's telephone number
  • Nominee's Ph.D. institution
  • Nominee's (expected) Date of Ph.D. (month and year required)
  • Nominator's recommendation and judgment of nominee's potential. The letter must be uploaded as a PDF file and will be included in the candidate's file as an additional letter of support.
The Executive Committee finds it helpful in the recommendation letter to have the candidate compared with others at a similar stage in their development. The Fellowship is highly competitive and the letter should be persuasive. Successful Miller Fellows exhibit an energetic curiosity for their science and a desire to participate in the Miller Institute community. Should a nominee submit an application, the recommendation will serve as an additional letter of support. Upon successful submission of your nomination, an email receipt will be sent.

Advice for Applying for Scholarships

There is nothing better then free money

Scholarship applications are somewhat similar to your standard college application. You have to put time, energy, and research into locating and applying for college scholarships, but the payoff of receiving scholarship funds heavily outweighs the time and energy in applying for them.

Application Advice

Do your homework. It is helpful to research the scholarship and find previous applicants. If you happen to know anyone who received the scholarship funds, it might be useful to see how they wrote their application essay. It really comes down to using your common sense and following the directions. Scholarship chairs are sophisticated individuals, gear your essay(s) to the Chair of record for your scholarship.

Plan Ahead and Research Early

The more potential scholarships you find the better chance you will have in getting a scholarship funded! Below is a step by step process in for the application process:

- Locate scholarship leads though your school and searching online.
- Any questions - contact the scholarship sponsors. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK!
- Sort though and cut the leads list down to ones that you think are applicable to you.
- Request any additional information and or materials.
- Don't leave items blank - If you don't know, again contact the sponsor.
- Complete, proofread, proofread again, and submit your applications as early as possible. It has been shown that early applications are read first.

Organize All Scholarship Materials

Make a list of all scholarship deadlines. Also most scholarships require providing some of below documents:

- Transcript
- Standardized test scores
- Financial aid forms, such as the FAFSA or PROFILE
- Parent's financial information, including tax returns
- One or more essays
- One or more letters of recommendation
- Proof of eligibility (e.g. membership credentials)

Don't forget to proofread your application, spell check, and have another person such as your teacher, friend or mentor look over your essay.

Have back ups

Make sure to make copies of all your documents and save your application and have it readily available. There have been recorded nightmare stories where sponsors claimed they never got the application and the student did not have back up copy to provide the scholarship sponsor. Keeping a backup will also allow you to easily apply to multiple scholarships at once.

How to Prepare for Scholarships

Scholarships provide one of the best ways to pay for your college education, as they do not need to be repaid. Easy scholarships are those that are easy to apply for, easy to understand and take little time for application. But, you must know yourself and you often need information at your fingertips for applications. You can pull together the following information and keep it in a file for easy access:

Transcript
Standardized test scores
Financial aid forms, such as the FAFSA or PROFILE
Parent’s financial information, including tax returns
One or more letters of recommendation
Proof of eligibility (e.g. membership credentials)
Medical records for student and parents
Military records for student and parents
Job and career proof for student and parents

Next, make a file for each scholarship and contest that you enter, noting the entry deadline and end of contest dates.

When you apply for a scholarship or contest for college funds, be sure to read instructions carefully and follow those instructions to the letter. Make copies of everything you do and don’t leave any items blank. Proofread your entry before you hit the “send” button or before you seal it up to send it off in the regular mail. Finally, get all your applications in early and often (some scholarship funds are offered monthly, and you must reapply each month to be in the running). Make a calendar to note these dates so you don’t forget to enter again.

Your preparation and organization can increase the odds that you might win, especially when competing against people who are not organized.

EDUCATE ABROAD
Studying overseas is not a luxury, it is a necessity. It is essential for students to take the opportunity of gaining international experiences that will provide long-lasting benefits personally and professionally. However, many students do not consider studying abroad because of financial constraints, unaware that there are financial assistance options available to help them fund their study abroad programs. Most schools and some private organizations offer scholarships and grants for students who are interested in exploring the world, they are only an application away.
The Guide to Degree Education Abroad
To be educated abroad, or not to be educated abroad? Considering the wealth of opportunities and exciting experiences studying in a foreign country can offer, there is only one answer to that question!
Immersing yourself in the culture and education system of another country will contribute to your growth as a person and make you stand out from other prospective employees in todays job market. With the benefits of a fresh and exciting cultural environment, new ways of learning and potentially higher standards of education than at home, students can not only expand their minds but their networks too.
With the aid of our popular study guides students can choose bachelors and masters degrees from countries across Central and Eastern Europe, the UK, the USA and Canada. Courses and programs are arranged by area and program of study for easy browsing under Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Engineering and Technology, MBA's and Science.
Academic study guides are also offered for distance learning / online courses, English language courses, university foundation courses and Accredited MBA's.

Tips for International Students

Princeton welcomes applications from students around the world. We review all applications in the same manner, regardless of citizenship or country of residence.

We are familiar with the educational systems of most countries. You are, of course, welcome to provide additional information about the schools you have attended.

Princeton does not accept applications for admission from students who have already enrolled in a university. We do not have a transfer admission process, and we consider anyone who has begun university elsewhere to be a transfer applicant.

Before you begin preparing your application, we encourage you to review our publication Ready.Set.Go (.pdf), which contains detailed information regarding Princeton's application process, standardized testing requirements and financial aid program.

The full need of all admitted international students is met the same as it is for students from the United States. Your family’s ability to pay for your university education is not a factor in our admission decision. Students who qualify for financial aid will receive a grant, rather than a loan that has to be repaid, and a term-time job (7-8 hours per week) to meet their need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

Our financial aid program is entirely need-based. Princeton does not offer academic or athletic merit scholarships. Financial aid awards cover the difference between Princeton’s costs and the amount your parents are expected to contribute to your education. The parental contribution is based on our evaluation of your financial aid application.

If English is not your native language, and you are attending a school where English is not the language of instruction, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in addition to the SAT or ACT plus writing, as well as SAT Subject Tests. You should instruct the testing agency to report your scores to Princeton. Students who have attended an English-medium secondary school for at least three years are not required to submit TOEFL results.

We encourage applicants attending schools outside the U.S. or Canada to complete their required standardized testing by the December test date if possible (SAT Reasoning Test or ACT plus writing, and two SAT Subject Tests, and TOEFL, if applicable). In our experience, scores from the January test date for testers outside the U.S. do not always reach us in time. However, if January is the only time you can take the test, please sit for the test in January and have your scores reported to us by the testing agency.

If the SAT tests are not offered in your country, we will consider your application without SAT results. However, we will have less information to consider when evaluating your application than we will have for applicants who are able to take the required tests. In some countries where the SAT is not offered, the ACT is available. If you cannot take the SAT, but the ACT is available, please take the ACT plus writing.

If your school does not have an adviser for students applying to university, please ask a school official--such as a principal, vice-principal or dean--to complete your School Report available on the Common Application or the Universal College Application.

If the person you ask to complete a teacher recommendation or School Report is not comfortable writing in English, he or she may complete the forms in another language. However, you will need to have the forms officially translated before they are submitted to the Admission Office.
